Founded in Luanda in 2016 by Sónia Ribeiro, who serves as CEO, THIS IS NOT A WHITE CUBE is an international contemporary art gallery based in Lisbon. It works with emerging and established artists from local and international contexts, developing a programme connected with European debates and the Global South.

The gallery’s approach emphasises inclusion and intercultural dialogue. As the first African gallery in Portugal to extend its collaborations to local artists and artistic practices from the Global South, it works with artists from Brazil and non-Portuguese-speaking African countries.

After establishing its position in Angola, the gallery expanded to Lisbon’s Chiado district in 2019, drawing on Portugal’s historical connections with Africa and creating a European base for its activities.

Its mission is to provide artists with a platform for their individual perspectives and to encourage discussion of historical and contemporary narratives within a global context. Its annual programme includes regular exhibitions in Lisbon and Luanda, cultural projects and participation in international art fairs.

Themes of identity, memory, heritage, cultural legacy and social change are central to its programme. Its artists also participate in museum exhibitions, biennials and other major presentations worldwide.

The gallery has curated exhibitions in Angola, Germany, South Africa, France, Italy, Serbia, Morocco, the United Kingdom and Portugal. It continues to develop its international relationships and expand the reach of its programme.
